About Ben More

Ben More (Gaelic: A' Bheinn Mhòr) is a mountain located in the southern highlands of Scotland. It is 1174M high and is the 16th highest mountain in Scotland. It is classed as a ‘Munro’ which is a Scottish mountain over 3000ft/914M high. It is one of 282 such Munros.

Ben More (Crianlarich) is one of three Munros in Scotland bearing the name ‘Ben More’ the others are on the island of Mull 59 miles (95KM) to the west (Ben More, Mull), and 125 miles  (200KM) further north in Sutherland (Ben More Assynt).

Ben More is often climbed together with its slightly smaller neighbour Stob Binnein (1165M). In summer these mountains make for a challenging hill walk; in winter they are somewhat more demanding both for mountaineering and ski touring.

Ben More has claimed a number of lives, and as with any mountain, should only be attempted by those carrying the correct kit and knowledge to use it. In winter, when there is lying snow, success on Ben More will require an ice-axe, crampons and appropriate skills.

Stob Binnein: Note that in winter, underfoot conditions on Stob Binnein between the bealach and the summit are often far worse than those encountered on Ben More. Its often icy even when Ben More isn’t.  Crampons/Axe are a must.
